Far from the crowds, a small village in the Algarve has been winning over visitors with its unique history and peaceful atmosphere. It’s just a few miles from Sagres.
Portugal continues to surprise with hidden gems still largely unexplored by many travelers. Among these hidden treasures are several villages scattered throughout the country, many of which are worth a visit, including... the village of Pedralva.
Described as “one of the Algarve’s best-kept secrets” by Yvan Mendes, who runs the TikTok account @viajar_emportugal, this village is located in the municipality of Vila do Bispo, just a few kilometers from Sagres. It is a rural village that gives the impression that time has stood still there, and at certain moments, the lack of cell service further reinforces this atmosphere of pure isolation.
In the past, Pedralva was home to about a hundred residents; however, over the last 25 years, the population has gradually declined, leaving the village in a state of near-abandonment. Fortunately, before this happened completely, a revitalization project emerged that transformed the site into tourist accommodations.
According to information available on the project’s website, this initiative began in 2006, at a time when only nine residents remained and about 50 houses were in an advanced state of disrepair. Of these, only nine met the minimum standards for habitability.
Today, Aldeia da Pedralva offers a variety of vacation homes in different styles, all restored in keeping with their original design and preserving their distinctive features, which gives each one a unique character.
Today, the area also features restaurants and a center dedicated to outdoor activities, with about 30 bicycles available to explore more than 300 kilometers of trails. For lovers of the sea, there is also a surf school, making this destination ideal for those seeking tranquility combined with adventure.
