One of the wildest and least-known beaches on the west coast of the Algarve, Praia da Murraçao takes a little effort. It’s down a rough track, about three miles long and best suited to off-road vehicles. There is no boardwalk, lifeguards nor café, so bring a picnic and plenty of drinking water. The cove is formed from dark schist cliffs and there are dunes leading down to the sea. The remoteness makes it a draw for naturists and naturalists alike, as well as walkers and photographers. Even strong swimmers should be cautious — the surf can produce strong, shifting rips, especially on big-swell days.
